Periodontal disease is described as an infection of the gum and bone surrounding the teeth. It starts with germs in your mouth that infect your gums, which is turn will cause gingivitis.
Gingivitis, on the other hand, is just an infection of your gums only. The gums may have a red appearance, or become swollen and bleed during tooth brushing. Without the proper treatment, gingivitis can lead to early gum disease. Early gum disease causes your gums to pull away from the teeth, and leaves a deep pocket where plaque and bacteria can build up and cause infection.
When there's gum disease, your body will deposit a mineral layer under the gums. This layer is called tartar, and tartar causes your gums to become swollen and possibly painful. When someone is initially treated for gum disease, that layer of tartar is eliminated. The name for this procedure is called "Scaling and Root Planing", and it is essential to treat gum disease before it becomes worse.
When gum disease progresses, the infection will spread deeper and deeper - infecting the bone around your teeth. When this happens, it's called periodontitis.
Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease. Your teeth may become loose and fall out, or need to be extracted. Many times people won't know that they have an infection because it doesn't hurt. By the time that the pain occurs, it is usually and unfortunately too late to save the teeth.
